From Spiegel & Grau:
This is what it’s like to be a high-school-age girl.
To forsake the boyfriend you once adored.
To meet the love of your life, who just happens to be your teacher.
To discover for the first time the power of your body and mind.
This is what it’s like to be a college-age woman.
To live through heartbreak.
To suffer the consequences of your choices.
To depend on others for survival but to have no one to trust but yourself.
This is Anthropology of an American Girl.
A literary sensation, this extraordinarily candid novel about the experience of growing up female in America will strike a nerve in readers of all ages.
Anthropology Of An American Girl: A Novel by Hilary Thayer Hamann should come equipped with a box of tissues and a prescription for Xanax, because tears will be shed over this book. Anthropology is about several years in the life of a young girl named Eveline , one of the most complex female characters I’ve come across in years. The book focuses primarily on three love affairs that she has during high school and college. It takes place from the late 1970s to the mid 1980s, and the author captures the time period perfectly, carefully weaving pop culture references and song lyrics important to the time period throughout the book. Rife with drug usage, rape, miscarriage, suicide, and some of the saddest funeral eulogies I have ever read, the author is not afraid to shock or disturb her readers in order to tell Eveline’s story. With Anthropology Of An American Girl Hamann has created a powerful coming of age novel about the struggles of the transition from girl to woman.
