While all you suckers were at home, school or work this past Thursday, my sister-in-law and I were on our way to Jackson, MS for the only Southeast stop of the Smart Chicks Kick It Tour. And let me tell ya, it was well worth the over three hour drive! For those of you who haven’t heard, Smart Chicks Kick It is a nation wide tour put on by a fabulous group of YA authors as a way to give back to their fans.
Authors on hand for the Jackson stop included Kelley Armstrong, Holly Black, Sarah Rees Brennan, Cassandra Clare, Melissa Marr, Alyson Noel & Jessica Verday. The ladies took lots of questions from the audience and gave away lots of swag to their delighted fans.
It was the first large signing event I have attended since starting WellReadWife.com. I was definitely not disappointed! I attended because I am a huge fan of Holly Black, Melissa Marr, and Cassandra Clare. They were so sweet and very patient with the “OMG! I love you!” type fan blather that I was spouting by the time I got to them in the signing line.
Some highlights of the night included:
- Cassandra Clare told a funny story about Holly Black that included drinking, prongs, and Voldemort. I’m not even going to try to tell it here! Cassandra also had on an awesome purple dress. Wish I would have thought to ask her where she got it!
- Sarah Rees Brennan is hilarious. Seriously, that girl is funny, and I now intend to read everything she has ever written.
- Melissa Marr seems like the sweetest person in the world. She offered lots of great advice for aspiring writers and even gave away an ARC of her forthcoming novel, Darkest Mercy to one lucky audience member! I was pretty jealous of that audience member, because I love the Wicked Lovely series! And it’s the final book of the series. I would know how the series was going to end! Aaaaaggghhhh! I’m dying to know!
- I finally got to meet Holly Black! Those of you that have been following me since I first started the blog know that I love me some Holly Black! Her book White Cat was my first giveaway here at WellReadWife.com. I will never forget how she tweeted about the contest for me repeatedly. At the event ,I was pleased to find that they were already selling copies of the anthology she co edited, Zombies vs. Unicorns. I, of course, bought a copy for myself and a copy to giveaway here on the blog as well!
I left that night with a renewed passion for urban fantasy and paranormal centered YA. All seven ladies were awesome. I really wish I had more time to write about it. I left that night with an armload of books by my favorite authors and literally a bagful of books by the authors on the tour whose books I haven’t had the pleasure of reading yet. I am so excited about reading thanks to the ladies of Smart Chicks Kick It!
